American Expats Living Abroad: Easy or Difficult Finding Remote Employment?

For Americans (U.S. citizens with U.S. passports and valid right to work in U.S.) living outside the U.S. there are many challenges finding remote work. If you’re a digital nomad on a tourist visa for example, you are pretty much restricted to only remote jobs or finding a rare ESL teaching position (rare if you live outside of Asia). If you are not in any tech-oriented field, the challenges become even greater, not to mention the jobs on sites like Pangian become fewer. What sound advice/tips can those who are U.S. expats, working (or not), offer for finding gainful remote employment?
